Is Peace Possible?: A doctors plea for peace

LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST (click on "Listen to this Podcast") AND WRITE A 1/2 PAGE TO 1 PAGE REFLECTION: TURN IN HARD COPY TO ME FOR EXTRA CREDIT (10 points)

A Gaza Doctor’s Case for Peace
Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Palestinian doctor and peace activist who trained in Israel and became a regular fixture on Israeli television, rests his head on his son Abdullah, 6, in a car before traveling to Israel with his children, near his house in Jebaliya, in the northern Gaza strip, Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009. Three of his daughters and a niece were killed by an Israeli shell which struck his house, and he returned to Gaza Wednesday to collect his remaining children. (AP)

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish was, and is, that remarkable Palestinian welcome on both sides of the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

A resident of Gaza, fluent in Hebrew, deeply devoted to peace. An obstetrician who treated both Palestinians and Israelis — who was welcomed by Israeli medical colleagues, one of whom called him a “magical, secret bridge between Israelis and Palestinians.”

On January 16, in the Israeli invasion of Gaza, an Israeli tank shell hit his home — and killed three of his daughters. Three. And still he calls for peace.

This hour, On Point: A conversation with Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish.

You can join the conversation. Do you remember the news report back then? Of Dr. Abul Aish and his family’s tragedy? Could you keep reaching out for peace?

Desmond Tutu

Tuesday November 27Th started the beginning of Peace Talks for the Middle East. Although hosted in the US, many Israelis and Palestians rallied against such talks--leading to injuries and death on both sides.
Please either read, listen to, or stream (prefer the latter two to get a better sense of the speaker) the speech given by Desmond Tutu. Next, share your findings, questions, and hopes for next steps in for the Peace talks. The premise of Tutu's speech is for Israel to learn from South African Apartheid. I also want you to comment on your awareness level of the talks--where you aware that these talks were happening? If so, why? If not, why? And what does your answer say (if anything) about your intercultural growth?

Scott Kennedy on Deck for 3.17

Please post your reponse, questions, or insights following Scott Kennedy's visit to our classroom today. I was very impressed with your honest questions, comments, and your respectful attentiveness. Again--I encourage you to listen to the podcast blog (the one with the picture of Carter)--I think it is helpful and only 35 minutes tops!

paRadise NoW!

Share your thoughts and questions about the film Paradise Now film. Remember to name your emotions--think and feel--and begin to formulate questions that surround this horrendous conflict affecting adults, children and all of humanity.

Choosing to look at it or choosing to walk away...

As you begin to learn more about the conflict between Palestine and Israel...I want you to take note of your emotional investment (or lack of); your willingness to open your heart to this crisis (so far away); and your interest (or lack of interest)? What questions have come up for you that you want us to explore further? Has your perception changed? If so, how? If not, why?

THE IRON WALL

Use this space to discuss the film, The Iron Wall. How/Did this film add to your knowledge of the conflict? Were you aware of the conflict prior to this class? If so, has your position changed or solidified in any way? Reading about this conflict often stirs up emotions that can be intense. Do not turn away from these emotions, try to name them, and if possible formulate questions that challenge both yourself and others.
